Description
Valgipes bucklandi, commonly known as Buckland's Ground Sloth, was a large terrestrial sloth that inhabited South America during the Pleistocene epoch. Measuring about 3 meters in length and weighing nearly a ton, it was a formidable presence in its environment. This species is notable for the fusion of its tibia and fibula bones, a characteristic feature of the Scelidotheriinae subfamily. The skull of V. bucklandi was robust, with a shortened yet high rostral region and dorsally inflated frontals. Its limbs were sturdy and well-adapted for weight-bearing, indicative of its terrestrial lifestyle.
