Aldabrachelys grandidieri
Description
The largest of the three extinct Malagasy giant tortoises, Aldabrachelys grandidieri was even bigger than A. abrupta. It lived in southwestern Madagascar’s spiny forests and semi-arid landscapes. This massive tortoise had a broad, high-domed shell, elephantine legs, and likely played a major role in seed dispersal and vegetation cycling.
