Physeter macrocephalus
The deep-diving giant of the oceans, the Sperm Whale is the largest toothed predator on Earth. It was intensely hunted by early whalers for spermaceti oil and remains an iconic species in maritime history.
Description
Sperm Whale (Physeter macrocephalus) — The Sperm Whale is found in all the world’s oceans, favoring deep offshore waters where it dives over 1,000 meters in search of squid, including the elusive giant squid. Adult males can reach over 18 meters in length and weigh up to 50 tons. Their massive heads, housing the spermaceti organ, once fueled entire industries by providing oil for lamps, lubricants, and candles. Socially complex, females and young form pods while adult males often roam alone. Today, Sperm Whales are protected, though they remain vulnerable to ship strikes, entanglement, and noise pollution.

Hunt History
Sperm Whales were central to the rise of the global whaling industry from the 17th through the 19th centuries. Basque, Dutch, English, and especially American whalers (such as those from New England) pursued them across the world’s oceans. The highly prized spermaceti oil, as well as whale oil and ambergris, made them a cornerstone of maritime economies. Whalers developed long voyages and advanced techniques to chase these whales, and they often faced immense danger, as Sperm Whales were capable of damaging or sinking ships (famously inspiring Herman Melville’s Moby-Dick). Industrial whaling in the 20th century reduced populations drastically, though numbers have been slowly recovering since international bans.
