To Treat the Oxyuriasis - Short Message from Dr. Hugo Stettiner ZUR BEHANDLUNG DER OXYURIASIS

GreatWhiteOncomingSquare.jpg

Dr Hugo Stettiner cures 5 patients with a carbohydrate-free diet to resolve their oxyurisis, the human pinworm parasite, and thinks diet is more important than drugs which only had temporary success.

To treat the oxyurl base. Short message.

From Dr. Hugo Stettiner - Berlin.

At the end of his explanations in No. 10 and 11 of this weekly, Rheindorf asks to declare war on the Oxyurs more than before. The fact that victory over this apparently harmless parasite, which can so badly affect its host, is not always easy, is already proven by the numerous literature that deals with the displacement of the same. I do not want to go into this in more detail, but rather briefly report on some experiences, the further pursuit of which I would like to leave to others in and of themselves. A patient close to me had suffered from oxyure since childhood. All kinds of cures were made, authorities would be questioned. always in vain. Even while I was still a student, I eagerly studied the literature and advised the patient to try all of the suggested means, be it per it or anum. The cures were repeated at regular intervals, but only with temporary success. I don't need to elaborate on how excruciating pruritus ani can be, how it can disturb the night's sleep and thus shake the nervous system. Diabetes mellitus developed in the patient's fifth decennium. The same has therefore been changed to carbohydrate-free for some time, later put on low-carbohydrate food. And lo and behold! which was not achieved with all cures, was achieved without a cure through diet alone. Patient was liberated from the oxyurs and has remained free ever since, After having often had the opportunity to treat children and adults with oxyuriasis in the past, I was often annoyed by the persistence of suffering. I decided to use the experience gained in the case mentioned above in other cases. Since then I have had the opportunity to see five patients, two maids and three children to be treated with oxyuris vermicularis. I proceeded in the usual way - Santonin, laxatives, clysters - and also prescribed a low-carbohydrate diet for the patients. In four out of the five cases I am very quick ie after repeating the treatment two or three times, to finally expel the parasite. I have not yet achieved my goal with one child, but I suspect the little girl has a sweet tooth and doesn’t stop dieting. In two of the patients, one maid and one child. Repeated cures had already been carried out by other parties, which, however, had only a temporary success. I would like to explain the effect in the following way. that the eggs that have entered the human body need a carbohydrate-rich nutrient medium for their development or the developed animals for the maintenance of life. Whether this presumption is correct. I would like to leave it up to others to check. In any case, it would be a pleasure to be welcomed if the experiences shared were confirmed by others.

A Carnivorous Diet in the Treatment of Flagellate Diarrhea in Journal of the American Medical Association

GreatWhiteOncomingSquare.jpg

Dr Hegner explains that an all meat carnivorous diet can be used to treat flagellate diarhhea but admits there have only been a few anecdotes.

A Carnivorous Diet in the Treatment of Flagellate Diarrhea - Robert W. Hegner. Jour. Am. Med. Assn., 83, 23. 1924

In searching for a method of control of intestinal disturbances caused by the presence of protozoa it has been found that carnivorous mammals are rarely reported as having intestinal protozoa, in omnivorous mammals it is less rare, and herbivorous mammals oftne have a variety of spices present in great numbers.

From a study of lower animals evidence has been obtained. showing that a carnivorous diet is unfavorable for the harboring within the intestines of flagellates of the genera Giardia (Lamblia) and Trichomonas. Physicians can determine the effect of a similar diet on patients having flagellate diarrhea or amebic dysentary.

There have been a limited number of cases of flagellate diarrhea studied where therer was a response to the treatment on a meat diet. However, more data is necessary before making a definite statement regarding the value of a carnivorous diet for eradicating the various species of intestinal protozoa. The readiness with which different forms of protozoa are affected is dependent upon their habitat. Observation and experiments indicate that the forms which live in the large intestine are the ones most quickly affected.

Menus which are suitable for use by physicians in research along this line have been prepared by McCollum and Simonds. A plea is made that medical men who have control of patients for a considerable time test the effects of a carnivorous diet on the intestinal protozoa of man.

The pH of the Contents of the Gastrointestinal Tract in Dogs, in Relation to Diet and Rickets

GreatWhiteOncomingSquare.jpg

The high fat diet, as might be expected, tended to give reactions in the more acid range of the normal variations.

In the experiments reported in the present paper, dogs were used. The diets provided were as follows, used ad l&turn.

Diet 1 .-125 gm. of lean meat, 100 gm. of cracker meal, 15 gm. of lard, 30 gm. of bone ash, 300 cc. of water. This is a routine normal diet.

Diet 2.-25 gm. of meat, 150 gm. of cracker meal, 30 gm. of lard, 30 gm. of bone ash, 350 cc. of water. This diet is relatively high in carbohydrate and low in protein.

Diet 3.-Lean meat-a high protein diet.

Diet 4.-50 gm. of meat, 50 gm. of cracker meal, 180 gm. of lard, 30 gm. of bone ash. This provides a high fat diet.

Diet 5.-175 cc. of whole milk, 200 gm. of white bread, 2 gm. of N&l. This is Mellanby’s Diet 2 (21) with which he produced rickets in puppies.

Diet 6.-l0 cc. of cod liver oil added to Diet 5

New health for everyman.

GreatWhiteOncomingSquare.jpg

Arbuthnot thinks roughage should be added to the diet to reduce intestinal diseases.

In 1932, a ‘New Health’ movement was promoted in which people were urged to include plenty of roughage in their diets and it was hoped then that the prompt passing of stools after each substantial meal would reduce the incidence of intestinal diseases.

In the 1930s Arbuthnot Lanel promoted a "New Health" movement in which he urged, inter alia, that plenty of roughage should be included in the diet. Efficient defaecation and the passage of stools promptly after every substantial meal carried the hope that the incidence of intestinal disease would thereby be reduced. Thirty years later Burkitt suggested that the freedom of Africans from intestinal cancer might be related to their subsistence on coarse cereal foods, which promoted the frequent excretion of copious, loose stools.

Treating Overweight Patients

GreatWhiteOncomingSquare.jpg

Dr Thorpe explains that rapid loss of weight withouth hunger, weakness, or constipation is made up of meat, fat, and water.

The simplest to prepare and most easily obtainable high-protein, high-fat, low-carbohydrate diet, and the one that will produce the most rapid loss of weight without hunger, weakness, lethargy, or constipation, is made up of meat, fat, and water. The total quantity eaten need not be noted, but the ratio of three parts of lean to one part of fat must be maintained. Usually within two or three days, the patient is found to be taking about 170 Gm. of lean meat and 57 Gm. of fat three times a day. Black coffee, clear tea, and water are unrestricted, and the salt intake is not reduced. When the patient complains of monotony, certain fruits and vegetables are added for variety. The overweight patient must be dealt with as an individual. He usually needs help in recognizing the factors at work in his particular case as well as considerable education in the matter of foods.
