So why would someone want to follow a Zero Carb way of eating like I do eating only meat, cheese, eggs, butter and drinking only water, tea and coffee without milk? Through videos like Dr. Barry Grove’s wonderful lecture called “Homo carnivoris”, and another great lecture by Dr. Michael Eades “Paleopathology and the Origins of the Paleo Diet”. I came to realize that 2 1/2 million years ago our evolutionary ancestors had formed a separate branch from the fruit and plant eating apes and with each evolutionary step had developed bigger brains and smaller guts so nothing but rich fatty meat in that small gut could have allowed them to maintain such a large brain and that it required even more fat in the diet every time they ratcheted the size of the brain up. This same material is presented in a more visually appealing format in the movie “The Perfect Human Diet“ where the moderator actually visits the laboratories of the scientists doing the research on Paleolithic diets to interview them. There are also natural experiments like the coastal Inuit of Alaska, the Nenets people of Siberia or the Maasai of Uganda that show a meat based diet leads to vigorous health with almost no consumption of plants and thus eating Zero Carb is an easy way to know you are eating a very healthy diet.
For me however the answer is Addiction. Sugar is as addictive as heroin or cocaine as Dr. Nicole Avena explains in this lecture. I was addicted to carbs and sugar. I couldn’t stop at one or two bowls of spaghetti squash, just a quarter of that low carb pizza and I could easily get out of control eating low carb nuts like walnuts, macadamia, and pecans, not to mention blueberries. Zero Carb makes it easy to avoid those “over-indulgences”. There is also evidence that a high fiber diet may be a risk factor for both the development of autoimmune diseases and flares of those diseases. I’ve posted about that here. After almost 3 years I am very comfortable with my Zero Carb diet and would not want to go back to a more Atkin’s, Paleo or Keto style low carb diet though they seem to work perfectly for many people who apparently do not have tendency to addictive eating.

Dr. Peter Martin is a Swedish MD and holds a PhD in CNS pharmacology. Dr Martin has earlier spent fifteen years in pharmaceutical research working with Nobel laureate Prof Arvid Carlsson. He was co-founder of Carlsson Research AB 1998 and served on the board of directors of this research company for eight years. Peter Martin also has experience working as a doctor in primary care and in hospitals. When experiencing a tough sick leave for Exhaustion Disorder he used low carb diet and later Functional Medicine as a means to recover and subsequently received training at the Institute for Functional Medicine and the Kresser Institute. Peter is currently a leader in the field of functional medicine. He is the founder of FunMed Clinics, a health tech startup and Europe’s largest medical practice dedicated to Functional Medicine employing eight doctors and eleven health coaches and growing rapidly. He is also co-founder of “Funktionsmedicinska Vårdutbildningar” (Functional medicine Healthcare Training Courses; www.fmvu.se) that has educated licensed practitioners by a 6 month online course in functional medicine since 2018. Further, he is co-founder of Hälsa & Funktionsmedicin (“Health & functional medicine”; 2019) which may be the only functional medicine magazine in the world. You can find Dr Martin at www.funmed.se. Web will be available in English in a few months.
Background: Small intestinal bacterial overgrowth (SIBO) is a clinical condition characterized by an excessive bacterial growth in the small intestine. Clinical symptoms might be non-specific (dyspepsia, bloating or abdominal discomfort). Nevertheless, SIBO can cause severe malabsorption, serious malnutrition, immune reactions, and deficiency syndromes. This retrospective case report introduces six patients with positive lactulose hydrogen SIBO breath tests. The patients chose between different therapeutic options and willingly consented to a nutritional intervention, based on a zero carbohydrate, zero fibre, carnivore diet, extended over two to six weeks of time. The rationale for this dietary approach was based on the idea that opportunistic, carbohydrate favouring bacteria and methanogens proliferate in the small intestines if the natural barriers in the digestive tract have been weakened due to stress, illness, medication, etc. A zero carbohydrate, carnivore diet, consisting of animal fats and protein, could essentially eliminate these carbohydrate favouring bacteria through starvation while still providing plenty of both calories and nutrients.
Methods: six patients from our functional medicine clinic followed a strict zero carb, zero fiber, carnivore diet for 2-6 weeks. A lactulose breath test was performed immediately before and after the dietary change as well as extensive medical testing.
Results: five patients that followed the carnivore diet for four weeks or longer tested negative for SIBO, and the one patient that only endured the diet for two weeks had a near complete eradication of her hydrogen elevation. Methane values were generally low both before and after the dietary treatment, but there was a significant decrease in patients 3 and 5.
Conclusions: The carbohydrate, zero fibre, carnivore diet shows great potential for being a readily available, cost-effective, and equally effective alternative treatment for SIBO. According to our observations it also results in better satisfaction after meals, decreases cravings for sweets and generate weight-loss in patients where it is needed.

Petro Dobromylskyj
I am Petro Dobromylskyj, always known as Peter. I'm a vet, trained at the RVC, London University. I was fortunate enough to intercalate a BSc degree in physiology in to my veterinary degree. I was even more fortunate to study under Patrick Wall at UCH, who set me on course to become a veterinary anaesthetist, mostly working on acute pain control. That led to the Certificate then Diploma in Veterinary Anaesthesia and enough publications to allow me to enter the European College of Veterinary Anaesthesia and Analgesia as a de facto founding member. Anaesthesia teaches you a lot. Basic science is combined with the occasional need to act rapidly. Wrong decisions can reward you with catastrophe in seconds. Thinking is mandatory. I stumbled on to nutrition completely by accident. Once you have been taught to think, it's hard to stop. I think about lots of things. These are some of them.
_______
Over the months on PKD I've added in very occasional cheese and a very, very occasional glass of Proseco on a Friday night, without apparent problems. Adding cauliflower or broccoli triggered low back soreness (I have to wonder if this is a nocebo effect, not exactly double blind!).
So nowadays I'm thinking about protein, GH, IGF-1 and insulin. I've always been cautious about protein levels but there are features about higher protein within a solidly ketogenic background that limits IGF-1 generation per unit GH secretion.
There are a number of posts there.
Currently I am, somewhat reluctantly, almost completely plant free. I'm no guru on this way of eating any more than on anything else, plus I'm very late to the party!

Yes, Race / economic disparities in healthcare do affect outcomes but in reality, metabolic fitness does matter a lot more in clinical outcomes. It's high time we focus on #insulinresistance for amputation prevention.

Robert Atkins
From his book:
WE'RE THE VICTIM OF "CARBOHYDRATE POISONING." The
most killing diseases of the twentieth century stem from what
I call "carbohydrate poisoning."
What causes that? Mainly, sugar. In many cases, virtually a sugar addiction. As Dr. John Yudkin points out, "We consume more sugar now in two weeks than we did in a year two centuries ago."
For decades now Americans have been brainwashed by
advertisers to start the day with processed cereals, and fill
up in the hours afterward with soft drinks that contain no
real nutritive value, only carbohydrates.
As cavemen, we humans evolved mainly on a diet of
meat. And that's what our bodies were and are built to handle.
For fifty million years our bodies had to deal with only minute amounts of carbohydrates-and unrefined carbohydates, at that. Seven thousand years ago, when man learned to till the soil, the quantity of carbohydrates man consumed increased-but they were still unrefined. In other words these carbohydrates were not artificially concentrated by a milling or refining process. Only over the last century has a drastic change come about in what man eats and drinks, with the advent of a diet predominantly composed of refined carbohydrates.
The mechanism meant to metabolize the original tiny
quantity we consumed has broken down under the killing
onslaught of our Coke-cake-catsup-cookies-and-candy-barculture. The result: overweight. Also cardiovascular disease, which accounts for the majority of deaths from all causes. Plus a whole spectrum of degenerative diseases previously unheard of.
Dr Atkins died in 2003, but rumors still swirl by vegan propagandists that he died because of his diet.
Wikipedia says:
On April 8, 2003, Atkins fell and hit his head on an icy New York sidewalk. He was admitted to Weill Cornell Medical Center, where he underwent surgery to remove a blood clot from his brain, but fell into a coma. He died on April 17, at age 72.
A report from the New York medical examiner's office leaked a year after his death said that Atkins had a history of heart attack, congestive heart failure and hypertension, and that at the time of his death he weighed 258 pounds (117 kg).
According to Stuart Trager, chairman of the Atkins Physicians Council (a group of physicians who work as consultants to the Atkins organization), this report contained incomplete medical records and that Atkins did not have a history of heart attack; instead, according to Trager, Atkins had cardiomyopathy, a heart muscle disease that was probably caused by a virus, not his diet. His widow refused to allow an autopsy.

Robert Cywes
In an email to me: Dr Rob Cywes wrote: "Personally, our entire family is 95%+carnivore including our 22 month old son who has been carnivore since he was a pre-embryo."
Dr. Cywes is Dual Board Certified in General Surgery and in Pediatric Surgery. He specializes in Pediatric and Adult obesity, diabetes, insulin resistance, metabolic brain development including Autism Spectrum Disorder and metabolic management including PCOS, Lipedema and other endocrine disorders. His focus is helping people understand and treat the true cause of their endocrine/metabolic disease including obesity and diabetes. He is increasingly working with high performance athletes as well. Dr Cywes is a strong proponent of Therapeutic Carbohydrate Restriction and is comfortable anywhere along the continuum of lowcarb vegetarian to pure carnivore ways of life.
Dr Cywes received his medical degree from The University of Cape Town, South Africa in 1987. He moved to North America and studied at Ohio State University's Columbus Children's Hospital before moving to Canada where he completed his general surgery residency and specialized in minimally invasive surgery at the University of Toronto. Dr. Cywes also earned a PhD in liver metabolism and immunology and the effect of glucose metabolism on vascular endothelium injury working with Dr David Jenkins, the father of the Glycemic Index.
After completing his pediatric surgery fellowship at the University of Michigan's C.S. Mott Children's Hospital, Dr. Cywes was appointed as an Assistant Professor of Pediatric and Fetal Surgery at Vanderbilt University in Nashville, Tennessee where he did hepatic stem cell research. During this time, Dr. Cywes became increasingly interested in adolescent obesity and the impact of carbohydrates on the liver and endocrine/metabolic syndrome in young patients. Dr. Cywes’ research led to a comprehensive understanding of the toxicity of chronic excessive carbohydrate consumption as the primary cause of obesity and so-called obesity-related co-morbidities, particularly diabetes and vascular inflammatory disorders. In the late 1990s Dr Cywes understood that the prevailing treatment of obesity using a Calories in, Calories out (CICO) model was erroneous, and he developed the Carbohydrate Insulin Model of Obesity and Diabetes (CIMOD). Using this model in combination with his understanding of the psychology of addiction, he developed a clinical program to treat obese adolescents using this approach.
In 2004, Dr. Cywes established Jacksonville Surgical Associates to continue his work in both adolescent and adult obesity and endocrine/metabolic treatment, and in 2013 opened a practice in West Palm Beach, Florida. He now works with a highly experienced team of professionals from a variety of medical sub-specialties to better care for obese patients. He has developed the practice into an internationally recognized Center of Excellence for obesity and metabolic management. The practice uses a cognitive behavioral therapy approach addressing carbohydrates as addictive substances to help patients manage the cause of their disease and establish remission. Based on his extensive clinical research and observations, Dr. Cywes lectures internationally regarding the physiological impact of carbohydrate consumption as the primary cause of the current Chronic Non- Communicable Disease (CNCDs) epidemic including PCOS and gestational diabetes. He also lectures on the behavioral aspects of carbohydrate addiction as the cause of obesity and obesity- related co-morbidities and the use of substance abuse methodology, rather than a diet and exercise approach, to the effective long term treatment of obesity. Dr Cywes firmly believes that metabolic disease, obesity and diabetes are not treated by surgery, however, surgery may be an invaluable tool along the journey of becoming carbohydrate-free.
Dr. Cywes is a Founder Member and on the Board of Directors of SMHP the Society for Metabolic Health Practitioners. He is also a member of ASMBS (American Society of Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery) and is a member of the ASMBS Childhood Obesity Committee. He is also a member of APSA (American Pediatric Surgery Association) and siths on the APSA Childhood Obesity Committee. He has earned a Centers of Excellence designation by the Surgical Review Corporation. Dr. Cywes trains healthcare workers in developing a CIMOD aftercare model to help patients maintain the changes to their lifestyles that they are making. Dr Cywes has become one of the foremost clinical authorities in the treatment and management of obesity and metabolic disease in adolescents. He is active in clinical research. He written several lowcarb book chapters and co-authored a book, Diabetes Unpacked outlining an effective approach to understanding and treating diabetes into remission. Dr. Cywes' vast experience in pediatric and general surgery serves him well in using bariatric surgery to treat obesity in adults and children. Dr Cywes maintains an active clinical practice in Jupiter and Jacksonville, Florida as well as conveying the CIMOD message on social media and through his websites – He has many podcasts freely available on YouTube at carbaddictiondoc. His website is Obesityunderstood.com and he is active on Facebook, Tiktok and Instagram. For consultations in person or on Zoom, Dr Cywes can be reached by texting 561 5170642 including via Whatsapp for international clients.

D) I like too look at the carnivore approach as a tool. I think it can be beneficial for many people who have dysfunctional gut micobimone. However, with that being said, there are benefits to having things like avocados, etc. in your diet. Its a tool and for many, they have been seeing great progress. The key is to not just go to Wendys and get burger patty's all the time. I would rather utilize organ meat as well.
